Bilal (Firat Ayverdi), a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee, has spent the last three months of his life travelling across Europe in an attempt to reunite with his girlfriend who recently emigrated to England. The journey has been difficult, but the end is in sight when Bilal finally reaches the far north coast of France, where he can literally see the white cliffs of Dover across the English Channel. But it is here that his journey comes to an abrupt halt as local authorities, and the immigration laws they are enforcing, prevent him from going any further. Not content with merely looking upon the country he desires to call his home, Bilal devises a plan to swim across the bitterly cold waters of the Channel, and heads to the local swimming pool to commence his training. It is here that he crosses paths with Simon (Vincent Lindon), a middle-aged swimming instructor with a dejected spirit, who is privately reeling in turmoil as he dreads an imminent divorce from his wife (Audrey Dana). Despite their differing ages, the two men discover that they have much in common, and their friendship develops into a strong bond that will prove necessary for both men to realise their dreams for a happy future. The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization.

We hear from a chorus of voices from six continents including Samdhong Rinpoche, the Prime Minister of Tibet's government in exile, Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten and Zac Goldsmith. They tell us that climate change and peak oil give us little choice: we need to localize, to bring the economy home. The good news is that as we move in this direction we will begin not only to heal the earth but also to restore our own sense of well-being. The Economics of Happiness restores our faith in humanity and challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world.

'Truck Farm' is a whimsical, musically-narrated, documentary film about urban agriculture. Filmmaker Ian Cheney (KING CORN, THE GREENING OF SOUTHIE, THE CITY DARK) planted a 1/1000th-acre farm in the back of his 1986 Dodge pick-up-truck in the spring of 2009, after coming to New York City and lacking any other place of his own to grow food. Using green-roof materials, heirloom seeds, and a healthy dose of optimism and humor, Ian created a mobile community farm that yielded a wide range of vegetables and led to the discovery and exploration of other creative, quirky, community-based agriculture efforts all over the city.

Pioneering Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene directed this controversial drama which deals in part with the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation (generally involving removal of the clitoris and temporary closure of the vagina), which is still practiced in a number of African nations in the name of "purification." Six girls who are scheduled to undergo the traditional purification ceremony escape, and four make their way to the home of Colle Ardo Gallo Sy (Fatoumata Coulibaly), a wife and mother who is sympathetic to their dilemma. Colle casts a "moolaade" spell, which will bring harm to anyone who attempts to hurt those under Colle's care. Colle finds few supporters in a village where tradition is sacred and change is regarded with great suspicion; the men who rule the tribe and the women who conduct the purification rituals both make their displeasure clear, but none can persuade Colle to vanquish the spell, which the others are obligated to respect. Meanwhile, Colle's daughter Amsatou (Salimata Traore) is facing a dilemma of her own. Amsatou has fallen in love with a young man who will one day inherit leadership of the tribe; a man who straddles traditional and modern life, he shuttles between an office job in Paris and the village of his birth. But, while he cares for Amsatou, her mother spared her from the purification ritual, and now she's uncertain if he will be willing to violate centuries of tribal tradition and wed a woman who is unclean in the eyes of his family. "SAMSON & DELILAH is Warwick Thornton’s first feature film as writer/director after a number of successful short films and an impressive career as one of this country’s top cinematographers.

Despite its title it bears no resemblance to the biblical story. It’s about two kids, young teenagers in a community in the central desert. Samson, (ROWAN McNAMARA) is a petrol-sniffing layabout who would play music if only his brother would let him.

He fancies Delilah, (MARISSA GIBSON) who looks after her grandmother – played by her real life grandmother, MITJILI GIBSON – and helps her with her artworks.

Delilah is a very self-contained young woman. When her grandmother dies and the community blames Delilah, quite ferociously, she and Samson take off for Alice Springs where they live on the fringe, unable to get life together.

This is for me one of the most wonderful films this country has ever produced. It is exquisitely made, it’s full of discipline. There’s not a spare moment in it.

The two young performers are mind-blowingly good. You enter into their world and you’re rivetted there for the fairly short duration of the film.

There is a European sensibility to it. There’s very little dialogue and there are long sequences, but with Thornton himself behind the camera – handheld in trying conditions – it looks fabulous.

But wait, there’s more...

The emotional punch that Samson and Delilah delivers is one of those rare things in cinema which doesn’t come along very often. And when it does you feel like falling down on your knees in gratitude.

And it’s not because Thornton has gone for sentimentality. It’s the reverse. He’s made a tough little film about love and it’s a knockout." Margaret Pomeranz

"DEPARTURES follows Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and who is suddenly left without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of “Nokanshi,” acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. Greetings on this warm summer afternoon, rain is starting to fall and the cool change is here at last! Many thanks to all of you who braved yesterday's heat to come along to our very first Black Cockatoo Bazaar. It was a hot yet wonderful day and we will definitely be doing another in Autumn next year!

But for now we would like to cordially invite you to our very last cinema night for the year, with a celebration of French Film & Wine!

As it is our last film event until late January, we're going to make a night of it, with great French organic wine & cider by Gill from FALL FROM GRACE and delicious savoury snacks & sweet treats from Sarah our very own Goodness Goddess! It grabs your heart immediately as the boarding school for blind children in Tehran, where Mohammad attends, is ending for summer vacation. Mohammad is the only child left after all the other parents have picked up their children. He is sitting alone on a bench and hears a baby bird fall out of its nest and chirping on the ground. He also hears a cat nearby. He manages to shoo the cat away and find the baby bird and climb the tree and return it to its nest. Welcome to the world of the blind. His father finally arrives and wants to leave him there. We meet a poor, hard working man from a rural village who has lost his wife and is trying to raise his other two daughters and make a living as best he can. He also wants to remarry and considers Mohammad to be an obstacle to finding a wife. The rest is a wonderful human interest story. The scenery is outstanding. Iran is really a beautiful country in many areas. Many emotions come to the surface during the film. It is a film you can easily watch with children who are mature enough to understand the themes. It is worth watching just to better understand the handicap of being a blind child. If you've seen CHILDREN OF HEAVEN, you know what's in store. Dear Friends

Well after a much deserved maternity vacation we are ready to kick start the Black Cockatoo Arthouse again for 2010. Life is going wonderfully for all three of us and we are adjusting to parenthood each step of the way!

As for the Black Cockatoo Arthouse? Well, the big news is that as of the end of March we will be known as The Black Cockatoo Arthouse Inc! With our new little girl (ASHARA !) and plans to build a house Sarah and I realised that we could no longer continue to subsidise the Arthouse with our own savings. As much as we love the space, it needs to be self sustaining. Therefore by incorporating we hope to be able to secure more funding grants, philanthropic donations (!) and open the space up for more community organised events. Details on this and our plans will be emailed out very soon!

Warm solstice greetings to you all from the Black Cockatoo Arthouse. We hope that the season brings you all that you could wish for for and more, much love, peace and happiness. We wish to thank you all for the support you have given us throughout the year and look forward to seeing you all next year! Many thanks for your support during Lucas Robins wondrous ONE JOURNEY exhibition. We felt both privileged and honoured to showcase the first exhibit of his art and incredible creativity. We are very sure he is an artist who will go places.

As for the Arthouse, it is a time of change and new direction as we head into the exciting and challenging realm of parenthood! One we are very stoked about! Thus the Arthouse will be closed until at least February when we will re-open with a new exhibition. So, all the best and we look forward to catching up with you in the new year.

Meet Local Film Maker AARON J MARCH & see his Award winning film HERON's STORY

In 2007 Paulo Coelho had the idea to create a film directed by directors (something that has never been done before in film making history) – each director telling the story of one of the 15 narrators from the book. Paulo invited film makers from around the world to submit their film for potential selection into the final 15. Written, Directed, Edited & Starring (amongst many other things!) local film maker, Aaron J March, HERON'S STORY won first prize out of 6,000 applicants.

We are extremely proud to present the Fleurieu Premiere of this wonderful film and give you an opportunity to meet the film maker, Aaron J March on Friday 13th February 2009.

The film commences at 8pm with a short intermission part way through and a question & answer session after the film.

Delicious snacks & beverages will be available throughout the night.
